Cat years in human years

Ever wondered how old your cat is? Like how old they are in human years – not cat years. Turns out they’re quite different!

Oh, the joys of having a cat! The sweet sound of purring mixed with a bit of sass. Cuddles interspersed with scratches and bites. There is never a dull moment!

I’ve always seen my cat as the equivalent of a small child. Turns out that is not right. Cats actually become the equivalent of a teenager during their first year of life! *those mood swings make a bit more sense now!

Let’s dive in!

Kittens (0-6 months) = 0-10 human years

Kittens progress very quickly through human years in their first 6 months of life. When your kitten is 1 month old – they are the equivalent of a human 1 year old. This pattern continues until they are 3 months old – where they step up to being the equivalent of a 4 year old.

4 months old = 6 human years

5 months old = 8 human years

6 months old = 10 human years

Cats become the equivalent of teenagers when they reach 8 months of age.

Cats (1 year old) = 15 human years

2 year old = 24 human years

3 year old = 28 human years

4 year old = 32 human years

5 year old = 36 human years * here is where I realised my cat was actually older than me!

6 year old = 40 human years

7 year old = 44 human years

8 year old = 48 human years

9 year old = 52 human years

10 year old = 56 human years

The pattern just keeps on going – adding 4 human years for each additional cat year.

What does it all mean?

Well, it definitely makes me think twice about how old my cat actually is. This is important because cats don’t necessarily show their age physically. Their fur doesn’t go grey or they may not show obvious signs of joint pain even when they have it. By keeping our cat’s equivalent age in mind we can be on the lookout for age-related conditions and hopefully, pick them up earlier.

Having trouble remembering your cat’s age?

We can help with that! We’ve nearly finished our digital product which allows you to access, edit and share your pet’s important information.

Put your cat’s birthday in once and we’ll automatically update their age. You’ll have your cat’s age at your fingertips whenever you need it.

Don’t know your cat’s exact birthday? No problem! Just put in the year you think they were born and we’ll do the rest.
